The region of Hochfranken

Hochfranken is located in the north-eastern part of Bavaria and is a part of the administrative region of Upper Franconia (Oberfranken). Hochfranken consists of the two country districts „Landkreis Hof" and „Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge" as well as the district-free city of Hof. The region borders on Thuringia (Thüringen) and Saxony (Sachsen) to the north, Middle Franconia (Mittelfranken) to the west, the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) to the south, and the Czech Republic to the east. Hochfranken comprises an area of 1.550 square kilometres; 230.000 people live in this region. The biggest cities are Hof, Marktredwitz and Selb. Hochfranken's character is largely derived from the low mountain range surrounding forests Fichtelgebirge and Frankenwald.
